Vampire Weekend has always been at least a bit of a secret ska-punk band. There’s definitely a pickup-pickup hup-hup-hup energy to tracks like “Cousins” and “This Life,” and I heard this thread as soon as I heard “A-Punk,” my favorite song. on the title track of Vampire Weekend. debut in 2008. (Obviously, it’s a plot people’s favorite VW song; it’s by far their most listened to track.) Today, a new cover takes “A-Punk” and turns it into a full-fledged ska.

In 2013, the legend of without love had amassed an impossible weight. My Bloody Valentine’s second album had long since been codified as one of the masterpieces of the 90s, one of the masterpieces of the alternative music period. A singular vision that spawned legions of imitators, a whole genre. Twenty-two years after its release, countless words and jaw-dropping praise have established it as one of those classics that could never be repeated. During my last semester of college in the first half of 2013, a fifteen-year-old music writer my senior visited our pop culture criticism class and told us that when he cuts , it bleeds the color of the without love cover. It was sacred territory. My Bloody Valentine had made an album that redirected what seemed possible with sound, with the limitations of guitar-based rock, and then they never followed through.
